Wedding videography has come a long way in the past few years due to rapid advances in technology. Within our own company, we’ve seen wedding videos go from stationary home videos from the back of the church to a dynamic team of videographers using non-obtrusive tools to make cinema-like wedding films. Ultimately gear isn’t everything, but we have a few essentials that compliment our skill to create efficient yet elegant wedding films.
Meet the trusty Canon 6D. We use this camera because it has great picture quality, good low-light performance, and a full-frame sensor. The video quality is on par with that of the Canon 5D mark III. Two of our shooters are on a 6d all day getting close and personal shots of details and capturing memorable moments.
Let us introduce you to the camera that can see in the dark. This camera has the ultimate low-light performance. We have used this camera up to ISO 50,000 and have had no problem. The picture quality and dynamic range on the a7s are also outstanding. This camera is on the glidecam for most of the day and also used to get important establishing shots. Wide shots look nice and detailed on this camera because of it’s fine picture quality.
Canon 5D mark II:
This camera is now almost 8 years old, but it’s full-frame video quality is still able to stand up to the Canon 6D. We use this camera as our fourth, unmanned camera during the wedding ceremony.
DJI Phantom 3 Professional:
Take me on a magic carpet ride! At it’s low price point, this quadcopter gets awe-dropping and smooth shots that look like they are straight out of a movie. We use this to get spectacular establishing shots at different locations during the wedding day. We use it to capture epic moments between the bride and groom as well.
Canon 50mm F/1.4:
Say hello to our “go to” lens. The focal length of 50mm is closest to that of the human eye, so this lens has a warm, personal feel. It also produces beautiful quality shots by separating the subject from the the background.
Sigma 70-200mm F2.8:
We call this lens the “Big Boy.” This is our second most used lens and it partners well with the 50mm lens to get close-up shots without being obnoxiously near the subject. We use two of these lenses to capture close-up angles of the bride and groom as they say their vows, which create a more personal feel.
Canon 24-105mm F/4:
This jack of all trades is a great all around lens as it can zoom to the essential focal lengths. We use this lens on the third camera angle during the ceremony so that we can get a variety of creative shots without having to constantly change lenses.
Canon 16-35mm F/2.8:
This is an incredible lens for getting larger than life establishing shots. This lens can make a cramped space look large and spectacular. We like to use this lens to get beautiful wide shots of locations, churches, and reception venues. Partnered with the glidecam, this lens gives off an impeccably smooth look.
Canon TS-E 45mm F/2.8:
Oh baby! Meet our tilt-shift lens. We like to use this lens to capture magical moments during the wedding day. This lens makes the image look dreamy and full of enchantment, giving our weddings the spunk and emotion that they need.
Manfrotto MVM500A Monopod:
This here, is one of our best friends on a wedding day. The monopod is one of the most versatile tools for camera movement. It has a very small footprint, but it helps us get all the angles we need throughout the wedding day.
Introducing the Glidecam aka “Smooth Criminal.” We use the Glidecam to get incredibly smooth and cinematic shots. It helps us to achieve film-like dolly shots during a wedding without much set-up time.
Konova K2 Slider:
Responsible for many of our cinematic shots, the Kenova Slider is a great tool. We use this slider to add a breath of movement to our shots throughout the wedding day. Adding a variety of camera movement keeps our wedding films fresh and fun to watch.
The good old tripod. We use a tripod to get our steadiest shots during the ceremony and reception.
These lights are amazing. They are small, but have a very strong output. They are dimmable and the color temperature is adjustable from 3200-5600K. We use these lights during the reception toasts and dances.
As much as possible we use natural light. Placing subjects near a window makes a world of difference.
Sennheiser ew 112-p G3 Wireless Lav:
Audio is one of the most important storytelling tools in our wedding films. We use two sets of these mics to capture audio during the ceremony. One set goes on the officiant and the other set on the groom to capture the vows. We also use these mics on the bride and groom during their pre-first-look interviews.
We use this handy sound recorder to capture the toasts during the reception. Getting good audio during the toasts greatly increases the story quality of our wedding films. We also use it to record ambient audio, instrument audio, or a second speaker during the ceremony.
Whrilwind SP1x2 Mic Splitter:
In order for us to capture pristine audio during the toasts, we use a mic splitter to get a clean audio signal directly from the DJ’s microphone. This way, we have complete control over the audio levels for the toasts.
This amount of equipment might seem daunting at first glance to someone just starting out, or maybe even scarce for a more experienced filmmaker. Just remember to keep filming with what you’ve got and accumulate gear to your needs as you go along. After all, we started filming weddings using a Sony Handycam. Be creative, be excited, and don’t stop shooting!
